A live stream plays a shared, ongoing programme: listeners join what is currently on air. On-demand audio lets each listener start a recording independently. Understanding bitrate and bandwidth
Bitrate is the amount of encoded audio data sent each second. Higher bitrates use more bandwidth, but quality also depends on the codec and the original recording. At 128 kbps, one listener uses roughly 57.6 MB per hour of audio data, excluding protocol overhead. Ten listeners staying for an hour use about ten times that amount. Use listening hours as well as peak audience size when estimating transfer needs.
Preparing a reliable audio source
Test the upload connection at your broadcasting location and leave room for other network traffic. Set a supported format and a bitrate within your hosting plan limits. Keep speech and music at consistent levels and avoid clipping at the source. A clean input makes a greater difference than turning up the volume in the listener player.
Making your stream easy to hear
Share the listening page or public stream link supplied with your service. Test playback on the devices your audience uses, including a phone and a desktop browser. Check the actual listening URL when adding a stream to your website, especially when the website uses HTTPS. A server password is never a listener link.
Will listeners hear my broadcast instantly?
There is usually a delay between your source and the listener because encoders and players buffer audio. The delay varies with the software, connection and player. Test the complete listening path before using the stream for time-sensitive audience interaction.
